ANOTHER RELATIONSHIP

strong>
I was just sitting at home watching, Will & Grace and got to thinking about Mel & the Professor's Blogradio show that airs tomorrow at 9/8 est on the topic of "Cheating"...I was also listening to Syleena Johnson's, "Another Relationship" cut and thought of the lasting affects infidelity could have on a person...It never feels good when it's you, so why do people continue to engage in more than one relationship at a time? HOWEVER, I was thinking while listening (her lyrics I will type in Red), to the song and what I came up with was while you might think you were being slick or making a pimp move could really mess with someone's head.. And, it could give them abandonment issues, contribute to them having low self-esteem and give them the sense that they are not worthy to be loved..(but we know in the final analysis they are in control of their self worth)...but I'm just saying if you are not part of the solution, then you are most definitely part of the problem... humm

I gave you my expectations of the relationship, and if we both chose why are you still playing games... I'm sitting at home waiting on you to come so we can spend a nice quiet night together and I have the house all cleaned, smelling good, I smell wonderful with your favorite fragrance, negligee and my Zsa Zsa Gabor slippers with the fur on them....Syleena Johnson is piping through the speakers singing her heart out,

I could just hear the anxiety in her voice, because she has not a clue why she is being cheated on....She totally feels at a lost because she felt that she had invested her time and energy into this nigga and he has renegged on the agreement. What does the other woman have that she doesn't, she is begging for some answers to her questions because she still loves him and wants so terribly for this thing to work.....

But, on a personal tip I feel that I am a prize so therefore I will not spend my time and energy on a relationship that is not going anywhere...You cannot make someone love you, so you have to pick your self up and keep it moving.. Because, at the end of the day all you have is yourself, and if you continue to let someone else control your thoughts and put the value on your self-worth, then you are putting your faith in the wrong counsel. You are something to somebody, and if you have to spend time alone getting to know you more intimately, then so be it....

"Soloist" subject won't watch movie

'Soloist' subject won't watch movie
Published: April 21, 2009 at 6:03 PM

The schizophrenic musician whose life is portrayed in "The Soloist," won't watch the new Hollywood film because it is too disturbing for him, his friend said.

The movie is based on actual events and stars Jamie Foxx as homeless musical prodigy Nathaniel Ayers and Robert Downey Jr. as Steve Lopez, the Los Angeles Times columnist who befriends Ayers and brings attention to his talent.

The real-life Lopez told the New York Post Ayers attended the premiere of the movie about his life, but kept his eyes shut the entire time.

"He's frightened by things on TV screens or movie screens," Lopez said. "Nathaniel hears things and sees things we don't. ... His days are spent trying to figure out what's real and what's not. It doesn't help that, in this case, some of the images are representations of him, and that the movie includes some fairly dramatic scenes of his breakdown."

Director Joe Wright told the Post he hired hundreds of Ayers' friends and acquaintances from the Lamp homeless community center in Los Angeles to work on the movie.

"I felt far safer there than in the offices of Hollywood and Beverly Hills, where you're very likely to be stabbed in the back," Wright joked. "Downtown, I found the community to be very open and trusting. And with proper laughter. In Hollywood, if you say something funny, people kind of say: 'Ha. That's funny.' But they don't actually laugh, which I find slightly disconcerting. Whereas the members of Lamp, we had proper laughter. And tears."
I cannot wait to see this on Friday.

OFFICIALLY MISSING YOU

Tamia - Officially Missing You -

The teenage clerk at the grocery store kept looking at me really funny, because I came through his line with all these plastic produce bags. In all of these bags I had my goodies for tonights sexy. I had about a handful of white grapes, one jalepeno pepper, one peach, 5 strawberries, one lemon and I had to buy the whole jar of pickles and I had caramel sauce and some Cool Whip. Wow, I was getting moist in the store just thinking about what I had planned for tonight...

My baby was cuming home and I had a terrible itch that needed to be scratched. So, I had already taken a trip to the salon and got the hair did, nails done and my body waxed. I don't like hair on my body so I always have it waxed off. At first I started doing it just for me, but then my baby got excited with the way that it felt too so I knew it was all good. I had everything together, I had rubbed down the house and had it smelling all good. I brought new sheets for the bed, because he is very attentive and notices everything. He would like thfact that I had purchased some new linen for his homecoming. Everything was set so I ran me a bubble bath and soaked my body to make it all silky for my man. I want him to know he is HOME!!

After my bath I didn't fully dry off because the body oil that I like goes on better with damp skin. It gets into my pores and premeates all night, I don't want to leave any stones unturned. I walk through the living room and light some candles and I go into the kitchen for a last minute check on my surprise. I hear his key in the door and I get a tingle in my belly, because my baby is here and I am SO READY TO FEEL HIM, my breast stand at attention and my senses are heightened. He comes in the semi-lit kitchen where I am standing at the sink and lightly kisses my neck. WHEW WEEEE, I have missed him...HUMM I moan while he takes me around my waist and lets me know he has missed me as well...Then he says, BABY I HAVE MISSED ME SOME YOU!!!! He then starts rubbing my breast through my silk robe, that's all I have on because I don't have time to wait on him to undress me... I tell him to go get in the shower because I have to do something and I will be finished about time he gets out....He agrees and says, "what done got into you, I love coming home", you know you are a freaky little sumthin, sumthin....But, I'm only freaky for you baby, I assure him...

I have produced a great mixed cd for his homecoming also, and the song by Tamia, "Officially Missing You", is the first 3 songs.
I have some Gerald Levert, "Feel Real", several Luther Vandross, The O'Jays, Donell Jones, Manhattans and LTD....I am getting my freak on tonight, and I mean it....Jonathan comes out of the bath with that big monster standing straight up and I just get torn up by just looking at it. He is packing 11 inches, (I measured so don't play) and it is as round as a can of Vienna sausage, I'm just saying....I then instruct him to lie on the bed and I blindfold him, he was kinda hesitate but he knew I had something wonderful for him. I then started feeding him my purchases from the store and he had to guess what it was that I was giving him. Of course he knew everything, and then I told him there was one more thing that I needed for him to guess. I got up on the bed and ever so slowly lowered my pelvis down to his face, lick this baby OOOHHHH, that shit feel too damn good.......Jonathan started sucking my honey like it was honey from a bee, ARGGHHH,

DAYUUUMMM BABY...

UUMMM....

"I MISSED YOU DADDY", I was so weak after that I had to lay down to get my self together.

Jonathan then started at my toes and worked his way up, when he got to Ms. Kitty he said he wanted me to turn around to the foot of the bed. Of course, I knew what that meant, so I had no problem obeying his commands. He turned around and started kissing me on my forehead and sucked my lips and would suck them semi-hard and then quickly release them so they would sorta pop...DAGGG BABY, I like it when he do that shit there... Jonathan then goes to my breast and gave them a wonderful workout, cuz he know I love that....but, I was really waiting on him to get to my pie because I knew that was cumming....Before he got there, I couldnt wait I grabbed his monster and started taking care of some serious bidness...I love this man and wanted him to KNOW THAT I WAS HIS WOMAN FA LIFE...I sucked him like my ice cream was melting on a 110 degree day in Texas, I would have sucked the skin off that mofo (If that's what he needed)... I didn't want to leave not one drop.....Because, remember I just bought these new SHEETS!!!

I AM SOOOOO CONFUSED, JUST TELL ME WHY...

I had been seeing on several websites about the Momma of the Year Award for stripping with kids in the room but, this is tooooo much. What really could be going through this girls head while she was dancing around shaking her ass to the camera with those lil bitty kids walking around? This is a crying shame, and the other people in the room who let it happen are just as much to blame...We are going to have to get it together people.

SO MUCH LOVE

Okay ya'll yesterday was about being the OTHER WOMAN, SIDELINE HO, SIDE PIECE, ETC...Today is about being the WIFE, MAIN, the Mama to Yo Kids...

Ya'll know I listen to music about 11 hours a day so errythang always comes back to music lyrics with me....My Ex Orlando used to always tell me that women put too much in to music, I beg to differ my little Young Buck...Maybe if these new artist would quit making so much bubble gum music people would have a better understanding on life....Back in the day even if yo Momma'nem didnt tell you something, some artist was singing about it and that helped a gurl to know how to deal with certain thangs, I'm just sayin...

Orlando once told me a story about him having a problem in his past relationship because he had a phone friend that his folks didnt know about....WRONG ANSWER, Cheating starts in the convo whether you want to believe it not....Thanks, SmokeNLove Doc, if you havent checked out his blog today, you should he is spittin much game ova there....Ladies when your man is not telling you what you need to hear, or giving you compliments, another mofo in your ear telling you that he wouldn't do you like that, you are a dime piece in his eyes (even though you were a size 20...He likes big boneded WOMEN!!!! See that's how you end up johnny wide on somebody's couch wondering HOW IN THE HELL DID I GET HERE?

But, back to my regularly scheduled programming...Men do you know how devastating it is for a GOOD WOMAN, (Meaning Me) feels when the man she has chosen, given her heart to, SEXED YOU HOW YOU WANTED IT, (even though some of that shit, skurred the hell out of me and plus it HURTED REAL BAD) been there for him through whatever he was going through, i.e. financial setbacks, problems @ work, baby mama drama, yo Mammy acting a fool an plotting shit behind my back and just BEING THAT SHOULDER FOR YOU TO LEAN ON... And you turn your stopid ass around and do me DIRTY.....This is not a male bashing blog, I LOVE ME SOME BALD HEADED BLACK NIGGA....DONT EVER GET THAT TWISTED PUHLEEZE...But, that shit does not feel good when it is YOU, EVER...

So, B ANGIE B'S question is , "Why do you have to look for LOVE out there, when there's so much LOVE HERE? As my Philosophy Professor, Dr. Hardy, at Tennessee State University says, "That's one of those endearing questions"...Something to make you go, HUM...GOOD QUESTION, FELLA'S WWWWHHHHYYY????

The Open Toed Shoe Pledge

----- Alright ladies, it's that time of year once again!!! I think we need to be reminded of a few things. So my sisters, PLEASE, raise your big toes and repeat after me below...

The Open Toed Shoe Pledge As a member of the Cute Girl Sisterhood, I pledge to follow the Rules when wearing sandals and other open-toe shoes:

I promise to always wear sandals that fit. My toes will not hang over and touch the ground, nor will my heels spill over the backs. And the sides and tops of my feet will not pudge out between the straps.

I will go polish-free or vow to keep the polish fresh, intact and chip-free. I will not cheat and just touch up my big toe.

I will sand down any mounds of skin before they turn hard and yellow. I will shave the hairs off my big toe.

I won't wear pantyhose even if my misinformed girlfriend, coworker, mother, sister tells me the toe seam really will stay under my toes if I tuck it there.

If a strap breaks, I won't duct-tape, pin, glue or tuck it back into place hoping it will stay put. I will get my shoe fixed or toss it.

I will not live in corn denial; rather I will lean on my good friend Dr. S choll's if my feet need him.

I will resist the urge to buy jelly shoes at Payless for the low, low price of $4.99 even if my feet are small enough to fit into the kids' sizes.

This is out of concern for my safety, and the safety of others. No one can walk properly when standing in a pool of sweat and I would hate to take someone down with me as I fall and break my ankle.

I will take my toe ring off toward the end of the day if my toes swell and begin to look like Vienna sausages.

I will be brutally honest with my girlfriend/sister/coworker when she asks me if her feet are too ugly to wear sandals. Someone has to tell her that her toes are as long as my fingers and no sandal makes creepy feet look good.

I will promise if I wear flip flops that I will ensure that they ac tually flip and flop, making the correct noise while walking and I will swear NOT to slide or drag my feet while wearing them.

I will promise to go to my local nail salon at least once per season and have a real pedicure (they are about $35 and worth EVERY penny).

I will promise to throw away any white/off-white sandals that show signs of wear... nothing is tackier than dirty white sandals.

Don't keep this to yourself - pass it on to other sisters

JAMIE FOXX APOLOGIZES TO MILEY ON LENO

My boy Jamie Foxx has overstepped his boundaries on his Satellite radio show with some terrible remarks about 16 year old, Miley Cyrus. I usually take up for Jamie, but he did too alittle too much this time and had to come clean on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. I am happy that he did the right thing, cuz his new movie, "The Soloist" is coming out on April 24th and I will definitely be there.

JESSE JACKSON COOPERATING WITH PROBE

Poor Jesse Jackson, Jr., is still in hot water after talking to former Governor Rod Blagojevich. He stated in back in December that he had not done anything wrong in the alleged selling of the senate seat in Illinois, but it seems that Blago is trying to take everyone down with him.

Jackson is cooperating with an Illinois review board on the indictment of the King of Comb-over's but, it doesn't look to good for career at this point. Blago was indicted last week on several charges from corruption to attempting to sell a senate seat. He is a piece of work, to say the least and while being indicted was with the family at the Disney World Resort.

Jesse Louis Jackson, Jr. (born March 11, 1965) is a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives in the Illinois 2nd congressional district, which includes Southland southeast suburbs and the Chicago Southside. He is the son of activist and former presidential candidate Jesse Jackson, Sr., and has served in his current post since winning a special election on December 12, 1995. His wife, Sandi Jackson, serves on Chicago City Council. Jackson also served as National co-chairman of President Barack Obama's presidential campaign.

I personally like the things that Jackson has done for Chicago and hope he can continue serving in the House after all this mess is over. Why is it that people get caught and start snitching all the time?

DAVID "POP" WINANS DIES IN NASHVILLE

Father of the Winans, BeBe and CeCe has passed away in Hospice of Nashville on April 8, 2009. He apparently suffered a heart attack and stroke in October of 2008 and was moved to hospice care in January.

Pop and Mom, "Delores" met while in the Lucille Lemon Choir conducted by James Cleveland. They have ten children together and are signed to their daughter CeCe's label PureSprings Gospel. They organized yearly Christmas concerts at Mercy Hall in which their ten children participated.

A statement from the Winans family indicated that Mr. Winans passed away quietly in Nashville with wife Delores, with whom he long made music under the name Mom and Pop Winans, at his bedside.

"The Winans Family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers and continued support, but would appreciate privacy at this time," the family's statement said.

Information on services for Mr. Winans is yet unavailable.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARCEDES

We celebrated Marcedes' birthday last night and had a great time. Bridgette was on time and that was shocking, but she had her new friend Randall with her and it all made sense. Randall was a good sport cuz you know we gave him the business and asked one thousand questions but, he held his own. He is definitely a nice person and a keeper.

In attendance was Marci, Tobias (her folks), Cilla, Tee Tee, Niece, friend, Michelle, Bridgette, Randall and of course, Me. We had good food and great fun. I hadn't been around most of them in a very long time, so it was nice to play catch up. It is so important to stay in touch with friends cuz life changes so fast. I meet this group of ladies while attending Tennessee State University, GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The next big event coming up is Marcedes receiving a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Middle Tennessee State University in May of this year. Happy Birthday Marci and Congratulations.

Michelle Obama and Mom grace cover of Essence

Now, Mommy Robinson is being recognized as a key figure in the White House. Marian Shields Robinson, Michelle Obama's mom is sharing the April cover of Essence magazine with daughter, Michelle. They both look stunning and show that the Mom keeps herself up and supports her daughter and son in law, President Barack H. Obama. Mrs. Robinson, now 72 , retired from her job as a bank secretary to assist Michelle and Barack with the girls while he was on the campaign trail. She has since moved into the White House to help get the girls settled but, will be moving back into her own home some time in the future.

Robinson, now a widow, married Michelle and Craig's father, Frasier Robinson in 1960. She is the first live-in grandmother in the White House since Elivera Doud, in the Eisenhower administration. She has been dubbed, "the First Granny."

TIGER GEARING UP FOR THE MASTERS

April 6th thru the 12th is the Masters Tournament in Augusta, GA. Amatuer golfer, Bobby Jones dominated the game in the 1920's and 30's. He made the game of golf exciting and fun to watch. One of my favorite movies is "The Legend of Bagger Vance." It also starred Matt Damon and Joel Gretsch as Bobby Jones.
The famous "Green Jacket" is presented to the winners and historically it was worn to identify past winners so that Club Members could easily spot them if they had questions. Tiger Woods won his first jacket in 1997 @ age, 21. But, on August 12, 2009, he is going for his fifth jacket win. Tiger Woods is a powerhouse and after that invigorating win at Bay Hill on March 29, 2009, I wait in much anticipation for the Masters Tournament.
Everyone is not happy about Tiger having a great swing at golf, in 2005, when he took the Masters title, fellow golfer Fuzzy Zoeller made some pretty racist remarks about Tiger. Although, Tiger didn't address these remarks, his caddy Steve Williams was called under fire recently about remarks he made about Phil Mikelson's "man boobs." Williams evidently doesn't like some of the attitude that is shown to Tiger and he lashed out.
Golf appears to be a very boring game, and it is at times, since he covers four days of tv time. But, things can get pretty intence too. I love the game and can't wait to sit back with some beef stew, cornbread and some ice cold lemonade.

Michelle Obama @ Madame Tussauds

WASHINGTON (CNN) — First lady Michelle Obama joins an elite group Tuesday.
She is to become the third U.S. presidential spouse with a lifelike wax figure on display at Madame Tussauds, a museum and tourist attraction.

Figures of Jacqueline Kennedy and Hillary Clinton stand in the museum alongside lookalikes of Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan, George Washington and Martin Luther King Jr. as well as Angelina Jolie and Will Smith.

Madame Tussauds touts its new addition as an "incredibly lifelike" figure in a sleeveless red dress based on the purple dress she wore when her husband claimed the Democratic nomination for president.

NORTH CAROLINA TAKES NCAA TITLE

The North Carolina Tarheels won against Michigan last night for their 5th NCAA title.

In an article on the "Associated Press" by Aaron Beard:

"A lot of outside people were saying we have to win it all or it's going to be a failure," Hansbrough said. "Well, you know what? It's not a failure. We came back to win a championship. We did, and we got the job done. There was a lot of pressure, but no one's disappointed in this locker room."

The horn had barely sounded when the Tar Heels (34-4) ran to midcourt, mobbed each other and jumped around on the Final Four logo. Some fought back tears, others couldn't wait to grab those championship T-shirts. This was a title a year in the making, starting the day those four players came back and made the team everybody's preseason pick to win it all.

The Tar Heels were just too much for the Spartans, who were playing in front of a home-state crowd and hoping to be a diversion from the economic woes that plague the city.

It turned out the Tar Heels had plenty to play for, too.

"Having the cause for Detroit is one thing, giving up millions of dollars to come back to win a championship is a pretty good cause, too," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "That makes me feel good for them and our game."

Hansbrough finished with 18 points, the final game of a career in which he set the Atlantic Coast Conference's scoring record and the school's rebounding mark.

Lawson had 21 points and a championship game-record eight steals, while fellow junior Ellington scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half to help the Tar Heels take a commanding lead. Green, a senior, had just six points before fouling out with 1:41 to play.

Still, the stats didn't matter. Not to a group that had carried the Tar Heels to a regional championship game in 2007 and a Final Four last season, only to fall short each time.

Not this year.

They roared out of the gate to take a double-digit lead in the first 4 minutes and made enough plays near the end to thwart the Spartans' desperate, but ultimately futile, comeback attempts.

"No one tried to play over their head and try to do things they weren't able to do," junior Deon Thompson said.

The moment was particularly sweet for Hansbrough, who talked openly about how badly he wanted to win a championship from the moment he arrived in Chapel Hill in 2005. He became one of the few four-year stars seemingly left in the college game and the first returning AP national player of the year since Shaquille O'Neal in 1991.

Lawson, Ellington and Green all opted to enter the NBA draft so they could work out for teams. But coach Roy Williams said none had the guaranteed draft position they wanted — Ellington and Green didn't figure to be first-round picks — so they opted to come back for another push.

With their top six scorers back, the Tar Heels started the year as the unanimous pick to win the championship. They played through injuries and under the weight of impossibly high expectations, including questions of whether they would go unbeaten. Hansbrough — praised for his determination and gritty work ethic — was even criticized for his game not being what it was last season.

But it all paid off Monday night, when they completed a dominating run through the NCAA tournament in which they won every game by at least 12 points. They were the first team to win every game by double figures on the way to the title since Duke in 2001.

"We came back to accomplish something," Green said. "We had to make some sacrifices. We had to give up a lot of individual things to make this work. There were some times where we had some slip-ups, but for the most part, I think we did a great job of working with each other and leaning on each other — especially in March."
Congrats to North Carolina on their victory.

SHE DONE BEEN

She Done Been - Gerald Levert

Why you keep doing this, Eugene? Huh, I'm tired of playing games with you, when are you coming clean? This is the conversation I have had with him every week, it seems, lately. I am sick of him, I am trying to stay with him for the kids sake. But, my patience is getting very thin. And, I know he has a jump off chick on Crenshaw, he swear I don't know about her. I was going over Auntie's house and saw him leaning up against my damn car, all up in her grill. WHAT THE PHUCK? He got me messed up, I'm just waiting on my raise next month and I'm OUT OF HERE, PIMPIN!!! I would love to stay here, but I don't really want him to know where I live.
See, he didn't start off like that, he was all good. But, I guess its part of my fault, because I married him when I was preggo's with our first baby. Listening to him, telling me he wasn't gone cheat no more after I caught him with his other BABY MAMA... I have forgiven him time after time, trying to be a good wife to him. But, of course, he is taking my kindness for weakness. That's what I get for taking the challenge of being with him and thinking I could walk away from that Monster he was packing...Not He was the FREAK OF THE CENTURY, NOW I KNEW I WASN'T GONE BE ABLE TO JUST WALK AWAY FROM THAT... Didn't look for the other qualities my Mama taught me...See, again, my fault...Letting my "little girl", THINK for me...WRONG ANSWER!!!! See, he got sexing on lock boy...Cuz, that's all his simple bringing to the table right now, because he is definitely living above his means. He a pretty good Daddy, sometimes...He will take the boys to the football field for practice for me when I have to work late. Now, don't get me wrong, he ain't paid for the opportunity for them to play or the uniforms. I even have to give him gas money to take them, NOW WHAT KINDA MESS IS THAT?
I must have bumped my head hard, when he hit me in the bathroom. I fell on the side of the vanity, in the kids bathroom..See, that's what I'm talking bout, he has started hitting me when the kids are walking around. They haven't seen him yet, but they are going to eventually...He at least used to wait until they were asleep. I don't even have hope that he is going to stop laying his hands on me, anymore. He has promised that shit for the last 5 years. Every time I try to leave, I'm pregnant and hormones all out of wack. But, I love him and don't want to think about raising our kids alone. The kids love their Daddy, so I take all this mess he putting out. I didn't get married to get a divorce. I thought only uneducated women got abused, WRONG...But, he didn't start doing that until we got this big ass mortgage. I didn't want my credit messed up by just leaving, so I thought it would get better. I thought we were living the "American Dream", that our kids would have life better than we did growing up. But, he is just like his father, it seems. And, he has to be in complete control. So, since I make a six figure salary, he can't handle it and hits me.
But, its getting harder to hide the bruises from my family and co-workers. My administrator even called me into his office one day and asked me was anything he could do for me. You know I was too embarrassed to even look him in the face. So, I usually just deal with my clients and don't talk to the co-workers. But, thank God, it didn't keep me from making Partner at the firm. I am blessed that he went on my work ethic and not what I must be going through at home. But, once the judge, even asked to see me in her chambers to ask about my big bruised lip one day....Can you imagine how awful it is for me to have to go in court representing my clients looking all beat up? He used to only hit me where I could cover it up, but now he doesn't care. So, that further lets me know its time to GET OUT OF THIS SITUATION.
I mean, I did it right, I thought. Graduated second in my class from law school at Howard. I was on the fast track to greatness, or so that was the plan. Eugene was doing well too in his computer software company. But, he wants to be ALL FLY in the streets...So, he can't afford to be pushing a CL600 Coupe Mercedes, $3,000 suits and playing golf three times a week. That shit is not cheap, so I have to pay most of the bills at the house. Ain't that some shit, but that's okay, I'm out of here next month. I have to keep telling myself that, because that's the only thing keeping me sane right now. Cuz, if I think about my situation too long, I'm gone hurt that negro. That girl can have him, but I am selling this house we live in. She won't be laying up in MY HOUSE, NAW BABYGIRL...They must got me twisted, I know I haven't shown much spunk lately, but they won't enjoy this house. They will have to live in her section 8 with all them heathens she got ova there. Cuz, once I get my alimony and child support from him, it won't be much left for her and her kids. But, that's not my business, I have to worry about me and mine.
A little disclaimer right here for the noseys. I don't have a man, so no this is not a real story. It is totally fiction, I have never been smacked by a man in my life...

Nancy Green: Aunt Jemima icon

The A.B. Frost painting of Aunt Jemima, as she was in the early days.
Nancy Green (November 17, 1834September 23, 1923) was a storyteller, cook, activist, and the first African-American model hired to promote a corporate trademark as "Aunt Jemima".

She was not only one of the greatest advertising icons of all time, but Aunt Jemima was also the advertising world's first living trademark. And, as with any such icon, she's had her fair share of controversy. But did you know who the real Aunt Jemima was? Born into slavery in 1834, the woman who would become known to millions as Aunt Jemima was really named Nancy Green. She was a warm, friendly woman who also happened to be an excellent cook (though, interestingly enough, the famous Aunt Jemima pancake recipe wasn't hers. It belonged to a company called the Pearl Milling Company). And it was in 1893 that she was discovered in Chicago, at the age of 59, by one R.T. Davis.

Head of the R.T. Davis Milling Company, Davis bought the pancake formula from Chris Rutt and Charles Underwood when the Pearl Milling Company went bankrupt. And though it was Rutt and Underwood who came up with the name "Aunt Jemima," it was Davis who decided to use a living person to endorse it.

History was made that year at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the very first time Nancy Green went public. It was there that she, with her charming and animated personality, engaged the crowds and supplied them with thousands of pancakes. In fact, she was such a sensation that police had to be assigned to keep the crowds moving! The rest of the story made marketing history. Soon, Nancy Green signed a lifetime contract with Davis, and her image was on billboards and advertisements all over the world. Davis was up to his eyeballs in pancake orders, and flour sales skyrocketed. Even after the Davis Company had to sell years later, Nancy Green remained the "pancake queen." It wasn't until 1923 when her legacy as a living trademark ended - when she was tragically struck and killed by a car in downtown Chicago. Two years later, the Aunt Jemima Mills were purchased by the Quaker Oats Company.

The famous image of Aunt Jemima was based on the real image of Nancy Green, an original painting of which recently sold for $9,030 at MastroNet. This painting was rendered by A.B. Frost, now regarded as one of the great illustrators of the Golden Age of American Illustration.

Aunt Jemima's image, however, has been modified since the days of Nancy Green and A.B. Frost. As social climates started to change and the 20th century wore on, many became offended by Aunt Jemima's image and felt that it was an outdated and negative portrayal of an African-American woman. If you take a look at today's Aunt Jemima, you'll notice that her kerchief is gone and her hair is styled. She wears earrings, and appears slimmer and younger. She does, however, have the same warm and inviting smile that she's always had.

TENNESSEE TITANS STILL ON TRACK

According, to Gary Estwick of the Tennessean newspaper, the Tennessee Titans are still holding their own with 90% renewal ratings of season ticket holders. That is a very good thing to hear at this time in our economy, because so many people are losing their houses and jobs. But, I say if you have to wiggle something else for what you love, go for it. As long as your kids and financial obligations are taken care of. We have to have some normalcy in our lives or we are going to explode.

I want to remember all the people who felt there was no way out and took their own lives or lives of loved one's. We need a big revival in America, and with Easter coming up is a good time to write down what you are thankful for. Sometimes when you put things on paper you get a better prospective.

May God Bless you and your families.

THIS IS WHAT THE ANGELS SOUNDED LIKE...

I had the pleasure to see Lacresia Campbell once a long time ago, and she came down the aisle and tore that church up...I love her voice, and had to just post this video of her with the Soul Children of Chicago. The choir is under the direction of Walt Whitman and he does an great job with their harmony.

JAMIE FOXX IN THE SOLOIST

Academy Award winner for "Ray", Jamie Foxx is starring in a new movie entitled, "The Soloist" with Robert Downey, Jr. on April 24, 2009. It is a story of Nathaniel Ayers, a musical prodigy who developed schizophrenia during his second year at The Juilliard School. Ayers became homeless and played the cello and violin in downtown Los Angeles before being discovered by LA Times journalist Steve Lopez, played by Robert Downey Jr, who wrote a few articles about Ayers.

I like Jamie Foxx and can't wait to see the movie on opening weekend.

Wow, did you see Tiger knock 'em down yesterday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational? I started watching the tournament around 2p.m and it was still going strong until 6:51 p.m. But, it was a site to behold. Tiger who has been out of commission for 8 months with knee surgery, brought out the big guns on this past weekend.

Sean O'Hair gave Tiger a run for his money basically the whole tournament. Tiger couldn't have that, he caught him about the 12th hole and had a few issues and past him. O'Hair had a problem on the 17th hole and knocked his ball into the water and that's where it got ugly. You know you can't do that kinda stuff when you are playing with Tiger. Tiger got to the 18th hole and gave that killa putt that we all know he can do.

I was jumping up and down and screaming like somebody crazy!!!!! It was totally awesome, and the commentators were excited as well. The lights were flashing all over his face as soon as his club hit the ball, he was lit up like a Christmas tree. But, when Tiger was aware that the ball was going to sink he started jumping and pumping his fist. Great day for the "Tiger" he had told reporoters that he was going back to the tips taught to him by his father, Earl Woods.

CHARLES RICHARD DREW, M.D.

Charles Drew

Dates: June 3, 1904 - April 1, 1950

Occupation: physician, scientist

Charles Drew, the Athlete

Charles Richard Drew was the first born of carpet layer Richard Thomas Drew and teacher Nora Burrell. Drew’s childhood was much like other African Americans of the time, except for his exceptional athletic ability. His athletic talent, which later would help fund his college education, emerged in high school. After graduating in 1922 with honors from Dunbar High School, his athleticism carried him into college. He received an athletic scholarship to Amherst College, where he played football.

By 1926, the same year that he graduated from Amherst, he was certain that he wanted to become a doctor. Drew, however, could not afford medical school. To earn money, he taught chemistry, biology, and was the director of athletics at Morgan State College in Baltimore, Maryland. Two years later, he resigned and began attending McGill University Medical School in Canada.

Drew Pursues a Medical Career While in medical school, he studied blood transfusions with Dr. John Beattie, a visiting professor from England. Through his studies, his interest in blood transfusions and blood storage was peaked. However, after graduating from medical school in 1933 with a Master of Surgery degree, his interest in blood was put on hold for five years. He served as professor of pathology at Howard University and completed a one-year residency at the Freedmen’s Hospital.

Drew Makes a Lifesaving Discovery In 1938, Drew received a two-year Rockefeller Fellowship to study blood at Columbia University Presbyterian Hospital in New York. While at Columbia, Drew made a remarkable discovery. At the time, stored blood only lasted seven days; Drew discovered that by using plasma, blood without the cells, it could be stored longer.

This was both a revolutionary discovery and a timely one. England was entering into World War II, and blood was essential to saving the lives of injured soldiers. In 1940, Drew’s discovery led to his recruitment to take charge of collecting, organizing, and sending blood plasma to England. One year later, when his position ended, he became the director of the American Red Cross’ program to collect blood.

As he had done for the English program, he was in charge of all aspects of blood collection. In the midst of his work for the American Red Cross, the military made a controversial decision. It ordered the segregation of blood from African American donators. Drew and other medical professionals argued, albeit without success, that there was no difference between white and African American blood. Nevertheless, segregated blood became military policy.

Drew Returns to Howard University In May 1941, Drew made the hard decision to resign from his position as the director of the American Red Cross. Some scholars have asserted that he left in protest of the segregated blood issue. However, according to scholar Louis Haber, in an interview with Drew’s widow, she stated that his reason for leaving was to return to his real passion, the practice of surgery. Drew left the Red Cross, and returned to Howard University and to the resident training program in surgery at the Freedmen’s Hospital.

At the time, Drew was one of the few African American physicians who were held in such high regard in the medical community. It is not hard to see why. In addition to his discovery of plasma use, he also was the first African American to earn a Doctor of Science degree (1940) and he became the first black surgeon examiner of the American Board of Surgery (1942). For his plasma work, he received the
NAACP Spingarn Medal in 1944.

Unfortunately, Charles Drew died young. On April 1, 1950, while driving three of his students to a medical meeting at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, Drew fell asleep at the wheel. His passengers only suffered injuries, but Drew did not survive.

The Life and Times of Thurgood Marshall

Thurgood Marshall (July 2, 1908 – January 24, 1993) was an American jurist and the first African American to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. Before becoming a judge, he was a lawyer who was best remembered for his high success rate in arguing before the Supreme Court and for the victory in Brown v. Board of Education. He was nominated to the court by President Lyndon Johnson in 1967.

Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 2, 1908, as the great-grandson of a slave. His original name was Thoroughgood but he shortened it to Thurgood in second grade, because he disliked spelling it. His father, William Marshall, who was a railroad porter, instilled in him an appreciation for the Constitution of the United States and the rule of law.[1] Additionally, as a child, he was punished for his school misbehavior by being forced to write copies of the Constitution, which he later said piqued his interest in the document.

Marshall was married twice; to Vivian "Buster" Burey from 1929 until her death in February 1955 and to Cecilia Suyat from December 1955 until his own death in 1993. He had two sons from his second marriage;[2] Thurgood Marshall, Jr., who is a former top aide to President Bill Clinton, and John W. Marshall, who is a former United States Marshals Service Director and since 2002 has served as Virginia Secretary of Public Safety under Governors Mark Warner and Tim Kaine.

Education

Marshall graduated from Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore in 1926 and from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in 1930. Afterward, Marshall wanted to apply to his hometown law school, the University of Maryland School of Law, but the dean told him that he would not be accepted due to the school's segregation policy. Later, as a civil rights litigator, he successfully sued the school for this policy in the case of Murray v. Pearson. As he could not attend the University of Maryland Marshall sought admission and was accepted at Howard University. He was influenced by its new dean, Charles Hamilton Houston, who instilled in his students the desire to apply the tenets of the Constitution to all Americans. Marshall was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Black Greek-letter fraternity, established by African American students in 1906.

Law career

Main article: Murray v. Pearson

Marshall received his law degree from the Howard University School of Law in 1933 where he graduated first in his class.[3] He then set up a private practice in Baltimore. The following year, he began working with the Baltimore NAACP. He won his first major civil rights case, Murray v. Pearson, 169 Md. 478 (1936). This involved the first attempt to chip away at Plessy v. Ferguson, a plan created by his co-counsel on the case Charles Hamilton Houston. Marshall represented Donald Gaines Murray, a black Amherst College graduate with excellent credentials who had been denied admission to the University of Maryland Law School because of its separate but equal policies. This policy required black students to accept one of three options, attend: Morgan College, the Princess Anne Academy, or out-of-state black institutions. In 1935, Thurgood Marshall argued the case for Murray, showing that neither of the in-state institutions offered a law school and that such schools were entirely unequal to the University of Maryland. Marshall and Houston expected to lose and intended to appeal to the federal courts. However, the Maryland Court of Appeals ruled against the state of Maryland and its Attorney General, who represented the University of Maryland, stating "Compliance with the Constitution cannot be deferred at the will of the state. Whatever system is adopted for legal education now must furnish equality of treatment now". While it was a moral victory, the ruling had no real authority outside the state of Maryland.

Chief Counsel for the NAACP

Marshall won his very first U.S. Supreme Court case, Chambers v. Florida, 309 U.S. 227 (1940), at the age of 32. That same year, he was appointed Chief Counsel for the NAACP. He argued many other cases before the Supreme Court, most of them successfully, including Smith v. Allwright, 321 U.S. 649 (1944); Shelley v. Kraemer, 334 U.S. 1 (1948); Sweatt v. Painter, 339 U.S. 629 (1950); and McLaurin v. Oklahoma State Regents, 339 U.S. 637 (1950). His most famous case as a lawyer was Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, 347 U.S. 483 (1954), the case in which the Supreme Court ruled that "separate but equal" public education was unconstitutional because it could never be truly equal. In total, Marshall won 29 out of the 32 cases he argued before the Supreme Court.

During the 1950s, Thurgood Marshall developed a ugly relationship with J. Edgar Hoover, the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In 1956, for example, he privately praised Hoover's campaign to discredit T.R.M. Howard, a maverick civil rights leader from Mississippi. During a national speaking tour, Howard had criticized the FBI's failure to seriously investigate cases such as the 1955 killers of George W. Lee and Emmett Till. Ironically, two years earlier Howard had arranged for Marshall to deliver a well-received speech at a rally of his Regional Council of Negro Leadership in Mound Bayou, Mississippi only days before the Brown decision.

President John F. Kennedy appointed Marshall to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1961. A group of Democratic Party Senators led by Mississippi's James Eastland held up his confirmation, so he served for the first several months under a recess appointment. Marshall remained on that court until 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed him Solicitor General.

U.S. Supreme Court
On June 13, 1967, President Johnson appointed Marshall to the Supreme Court following the retirement of Justice Tom C. Clark, saying that this was "the right thing to do, the right time to do it, the right man and the right place." Marshall was confirmed as an Associate Justice by a Senate vote of 69-11 on August 31, 1967.[4] He was the 96th person to hold the position, and the first African-American. President Johnson confidently predicted to one biographer, Doris Kearns Goodwin, that a lot of black baby boys would be named "Thurgood" in honor of this choice (in fact, Kearns's research of birth records in New York and Boston indicates that Johnson's prophecy did not come true).[5]

Marshall served on the Court for the next twenty-four years, compiling a liberal record that included strong support for Constitutional protection of individual rights, especially the rights of criminal suspects against the government. His most frequent ally on the Court (indeed, the pair rarely voted at odds) was Justice William Brennan, who consistently joined him in supporting abortion rights and opposing the death penalty. Brennan and Marshall concluded in Furman v. Georgia that the death penalty was, in all circumstances, unconstitutional, and never accepted the legitimacy of Gregg v. Georgia, which ruled four years later that the death penalty was constitutional in some circumstances. Thereafter, Brennan or Marshall dissented from every denial of certiorari in a capital case and from every decision upholding a sentence of death.[citation needed]

Although he is best remembered for his jurisprudence in the fields of civil rights and criminal procedure, Marshall made significant contributions to other areas of the law as well. In Teamsters v. Terry he held that the Seventh Amendment entitled the plaintiff to a jury trial in a suit against a labor union for breach of duty of fair representation. In TSC Industries, Inc. v. Northway, Inc. he articulated a formulation for the standard of materiality in United States securities law that is still applied and used today. In Cottage Savings Association v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue, he weighed in on the income tax consequences of the Savings and Loan crisis, permitting a savings and loan association to deduct a loss from an exchange of mortgage participation interests. In Personnel Administrator MA v. Feeney, Marshall wrote a dissent saying that a law that gave hiring preference to veterans over non-veterans was unconstitutional because of its inequitable impact on women.

Among his many law clerks were Judge Douglas Ginsburg of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals; Judge Ralph Winter of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit; well-known law professors Dan Kahan, Cass Sunstein, Eben Moglen, Susan Low Bloch, Martha Minow, Rick Pildes, and Mark Tushnet (and editor of Thurgood Marshall: His Speeches, Writings, Arguments, Opinions and Reminiscences, cited hereafter); Law Schools Deans Paul Mahoney of University of Virginia School of Law, Richard Revesz of New York University School of Law, and Elena Kagan of Harvard Law School. See, List of law clerks of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Death and Legacy
Marshall died of heart failure at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, at 2:58 p.m. on January 24, 1993 at the age of 84. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.[6] His second wife and their two sons survived him.

Marshall left all of his personal papers and notes to the Library of Congress. The Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington, opened Marshall's papers for immediate use by scholars, journalists and the public, insisting that this was Marshall's intent. The Marshall family and several of his close associates disputed this claim.[7] The decision to make the documents public was supported by the American Library Association.[8] A list of the archived manuscripts is available.[9]

There are numerous memorials to Justice Marshall. One is near the Maryland State House. The primary office building for the federal court system, located on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., is named in honor of Justice Marshall and contains a statue of him in the atrium. In 2000, the historic Twelfth Street YMCA Building located in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C. was renamed the Thurgood Marshall Center. The major airport serving Baltimore and the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC, was renamed the Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on October 1, 2005.

GREAT IS YOUR MERCY

What's goin on? I woke up from a great night's sleep and had a little pep in my step...My showcase artist today is the phenomenal man of God, DONNIE MCCLURKIN...This man is totally awesome and over the years have brought some wonderful songs for soul cleansing. I can sit and listen to him all day, and just have a shout on all by myself...Money is looking better, my youngest child, Justin, who is 20 yrs old is finding himself and has a new job with great potential for advancement, mountains are getting smaller, Mom is having some medical problems right now, but she will be okay I am confident. My eldest brother is in great spirits and helping me this week with spring cleaning. My oldest child just purchased a new car and she is very exciting to not have to catch a ride when she has to go to work. The Harlem Globetrotter's are here this week and I am taking the boys and my aunt, Arnita. So, needless to say I FEEL VERY BLESSED...

Which, brings me to the blog, can you just marinate on the words and the voices of Donnie McClurkin and his group when they say, "GREAT IS YOUR MERCY"...WOW, some words to say on a daily basis to give God all the praise, for bringing me a mighty long way...I'm not what I could be, but, thanks be to God, I'm not what I used to be. When I was young I used to hear people say that at church, and think "What are they talking about?" Well, as my Grandmama says, "keep living"...I know exactly what they are saying, I no longer want men who can't fully commit to me. No longer just quit at job because I'm bored, I could always get another one in a minute, so I thought it was okay. Until I went to buy a house a few years ago and they asked for my work history...Well, I could name off all the high dollar companies, but no longevity...Huummmm? So, now I just surf the net, to keep myself occupied...SIKE!!!!

I want to take this time right now to ask you how are things going in your life. If you have any testimony you would like to share, feel free. Good testimony or stumbling blocks, its all good in here...If you need prayer, just ask..I have had times in my life when I would call my friends and say, I don't seem to have the words to say to Jesus, CAN YOU HELP A SISTA OUT!!! Aint, no shame in my game, if I need something, I am asking...YOU CAN'T DO NOTHING BUT TELL ME TO GET A LIFE...Then I will just go to the next one, it won't deter me from getting what I want, NEVER...

Thank you guys for reading this, I do this for me and whoever else needs the encouragement to come out of their shell. Sometimes, we just need someone else to do it FIRST, then we get our strength to go just alittle bit further...HAVE A WONDERFULLY BLESSED DAY!!!

SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO LEAVE

I know he is not in there on the phone talking to a female, while I'm at home and the kids are walking around...He is so rude and disrespectful to me and I am getting sick and tired of being sick and tired..I need to call that lawyers office and see what is going on my divorce case, that stupid judge just doesn't understand what I go through on a daily basis living here in this hell. See, that's just like a man not to think its anything wrong because he thinks families should stay together no matter what the cost...This is not the 1950's where women dont have a say in their lives, we work everyday and contribute to the household bills just like our husbands. I need someone to look out for me and my kids best interest and it doesn't seem to be that country simple ass judge I have presiding over my case.

I got the kids fed and bathed and put everyone down to bed, after we said our prayers...I am blessed that the kids are on a schedule and don't give me too much trouble. All I want to do is take a shower and get in my bed and rest my mind, it is getting harder and harder living in this house with him. The water feels so good running down my body, its is hot like I like it and soothing to my aching head and bones. I thought I heard something but, just figured I was hearing things and didn't dwell on it too much. The next thing I know is the shower curtain is jerked back and Eugene is standing there naked as hell with a crazy look on his face. He then has the nerve to ask me if he could join me in the shower..My response of course was, HELL NAW AND GET OUT EUGENE!!! "I don't want to fight with you tonight, please leave me alone, was my plea to him." He pulled me by my hair and made me lose my balance and I fell on the cold tile floor.. I thought I liked this ceramic tile, but if you fall on it you will wish you made another choice. My lip started bleeding and my right shoulder was throbbing really bad. "Please Lord not again", was all was thinking when Eugene pulled me up and carried me into the bedroom. I begged him not to hurt me, but of course I was talking to deaf ears because he threw me on the bed..Before I could get my barrings together and get up he was on me, and just slammed into me without preamble..."Please don't do this, was my plea to try and make him see that it shouldn't have to be like this." Of course, he was getting a rush from dominating me and as far as he was concerned, I was still HIS WIFE, and he had a right to take my body anytime that he wanted to..

The pain I felt on my lips and my eye after he had smacked me several times, were nothing compared to the excuriating pain I felt in my kitty kat and my ass...See, he is very violent and that is one reason why I want to leave him is because when he gets angry with me he takes me from behind without any kind of lubricant at all...He gets pleasure from my pain, he is in to totally dominating me..I don't want a new Daddy, I had a great Father, but he grew up in an abusive home and he feels that's how we should live...He finally rolls off me after about 2 hrs. and falls asleep...I drag myself off the bed and go and get in the shower again to wash the stench off me that I feel from him...He is a straight pig and he will get his one day, I need to get a plan together to get out of this house and very soon...My kids didn't hear the commotion, but one day they will and I don't want them to have to live in fear for their little lives.

The next morning I get up and hurry to get the kids ready and out the door before he wakes up. The first thing I do when I get to work is call my law office to speak with the paralegal that has been so helpful to me. I was asking her about my case and what can of recourse I had on speeding up this procedure. She informed me she was doing all she could do get me divorced but everyone seemed to be dragging their feet. I couldn't take it any longer and I burst out crying in her ear and told her I couldn't take the abuse anymore and refuse to keep getting raped by my husband. She screamed in the phone, "What?" He has been raping you? Why didn't you tell me was her response? She then informed me she would get me a court date on an order of protection and for me to tell the judge everything that I had just told her...My paralegal called me back in 30 minutes and informed me I had a court date in 7 days...I was on pins and needles in anticipation of the date, we get to court and I asked the judge if I could speak and he said, of course, and I proceeded to recant the incident that had happened last week and so many times before...The judge was irate, and cursed Eugene out and granted my divorce right then and there...I was so elated I could burst, I went in for one thing and ended up getting the greatest blessing of all, MY FREEDOM...WHEW, it has taken two years to get this, and I feel like I have died and gone to heaven.

I called the law office and asked the receptionist to speak with the paralegal and told her what had happened and she was so excited for me. She then informed me that the court system didn't play spousal rape just like any other rape and they take that very seriously...She knew the judge would grant me the divorce but, I just never said anything because I was afraid of the retialiation from Eugene. And, I didn't really want everyone to know my business, you see I am a very private person. But, if I had known this would speed up my divorce, I would have disclosed that information two years earlier.

THIS STORY IS TRUE, IT IS ABOUT ONE OF MY CLIENTS AT THE LAW FIRM WHERE I USED TO WORK...THE NAMES HAVE BEEN CHANGED, BUT THE STORY REMAINS TRUE OF SO MANY WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD...THERE IS NEVER AN EXCUSE TO BEAT YOUR WIFE OR HUSBAND, IF SOMEONE MAKES YOU WANT TO HARM THEM, YOU NEED TO GET OUT OF THAT RELATIONSHIP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. LOVE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO CONTINUALLY HURT YOU, MENTALLY, SPIRITUALLY AND ESPECIALLY PHYSICALLY...

I AM SHIRLEY CHISHOLM

Mellanie Collins, Artist of sketch

Biograghy courtesy of AfricanAmericans.com
(b. November 20, 1924, Brooklyn, N.Y.), the first African American womanelected to the U.S. Congress and the first to campaign for the presidency, known for her incisive debating style and uncompromising integrity.January 3, 2005- Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress and an outspoken advocate for women and minorities during seven terms in the House, died near Daytona Beach, friends said Sunday. She was 80.
While Chisholm advocated for black civil rights, she regularly took up issues that concerned other people of color such as Native Americansand Spanish-speaking migrants. She also delivered important speeches on the economic and political rights of women and fearlessly criticized the Nixon Administration during the Vietnam War.
Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm was the oldest of four girls born to parents who had immigrated from the West Indies, and who barely subsisted on their wages from factory work and housecleaning. When Chisholm was three, her parents, desiring a better life for their daughters, sent Shirley and her sisters to Barbados to be reared by their maternal grandmother. For Chisholm island life seemed like a paradise, and she received an excellent education in Barbados's British school system. At the age of ten Chisholm returned to Brooklyn, where she was an outstanding student. Later, at Brooklyn College, she majored in sociology and joined the debating society, an experience that would influence her cut-and-thrust oratory style. She also served as a volunteer in the Brooklyn chapter of the National Urban League and in theNational Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), where she debated minority rights.

In 1949, after graduating from college, Chisholm attended evening classes at Columbia University, earning a master's degree in child education. Meanwhile, she taught at a Harlem nursery school, and later acted assupervisor of the largest nursery school network in New York. It was through administering to hundreds of children, the majority of them African American and Puerto Rican, that Chisholm learned the executive skills that served her so well in the political arena. In 1953, as a key member of the Seventeenth Assembly District Democratic Club, she waged a successful political campaign to elect an eminent black lawyer to the municipal court.
Democratic Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm of New York takes her oath of office.
Chisholm's political career took off in 1964, when she won by a landslide her campaign for the New York State Assembly. As an assemblyperson (1965-1968), she authored legislation that instituted SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge), a program that provided college funding to disadvantaged youths, and successfully introduced a bill that secured unemployment insurance for domestics and day-care providers. In 1968 Chisholm won a seat in the House of Representatives, where she served on a number of committees, including Education and Labor, and campaigned for a higher minimum wage and federal funding for day-care facilities. She also secured federal grants for a number of Brooklyn-based enterprises that benefited disadvantaged communities. In 1972 she became the first African American woman to campaign for the presidency, (The first woman ever to run for president was Victoria Woodhull, in 1872, on the Equal Rights Party platform.) running as "a candidate of the people." In doing so she paved the way for others like herself who, as she said in her autobiography The Good Fight, "will feel themselves as capable of running for high political office as any wealthy, good-looking white male."
Ms. Chisholm is one of the many black women who have been denied their rightful place in the history books.
Fortunately, a young filmmaker named Shola Lynch recently completed a documentary on Ms. Chisholm that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival a few weeks ago. The film, Chisholm '72: Unbought and Unbossed, features interviews with writer Amiri Baraka, feminist Susan Brownmiller and former Black Panther leader Bobby Seale. Ms. Chisholm herself is interviewed, and the archival footage from the 1970s brings her campaign to life.
In reflecting on her defeat in 1972, Ms. Chisholm remarks in the film: "There is little place in the political scheme of things for an independent, creative personality, for a fighter. Anyone who takes that role must pay a price.
